No one really knows the truth about the origin of the famous cocktail, the margarita, and there are several debated theories tracing all the way back to the 1930s and 1940s. One of the most common stories was printed in Esquire Magazine’s December 1953 issue which credits Ms. Margarita Sames, a Dallas socialite known for her grand parties at her Acapulco vacation home, with its creation in 1948. As the legend goes, Sames – in an attempt to please her party guests and quench their thirst from the hot, Mexican climate – combined her favorite spirits, Cointreau and tequila, in a sombrero shaped, salt-rimmed glass with a lime garnish. The concoction was a hit and one of her guests visiting from Spain gave it the name Margarita, in honor of its creator.

In celebration of the Original Margarita’s 70 year anniversary, Cointreau has partnered with goop, Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle brand, to host Margarita Mondays during their pop-up in Dallas. goop’s pop-up store is located in the Highland Park Village shopping center through June 3rd.
